Writer's Journal #14

Since I regularly use text messages I suppose, I'll choose to describe that. Texting invokes a casual sort of audience, the type of audience who doesn't expect much formality from the messages of the people who they're chatting with. The audience also doesn't expect good grammar and spelling at all, but they do expect short, brisk messages instead of long, detailed ones. Most people tend to adjust to the dynamics of texting and the types of audience that it invokes fairly quickly; this is because texting invokes an audience very quietly; it doesn't throw something at you and force you to conform to those standards. Over time, you get adjusted to the atmosphere of texting without really any coaxing.

Texting excludes quite a lot of people; including people who don't want to go crazy and scream in text messages, and people who are very detailed in messages and want people to know exactly what they're talking about in long form. Texting might expand this invoked audience by changing the atmosphere of the texting environment so that more people, even people who are very detailed in writing, can now participate in text messages. These changes would be made through screaming at the users of texting that they need to start opening up to other types of people, and then screaming at the people who have been excluded from texting that they need to get in on texting. This may or may not work, depending on who those people are, and how the screaming is carried out.

And that's all for Writer's Journal #14.
